I am back from my trip to Okinawa for the first annual Math Fest. It was so great to spend time with students who actually like math and want to talk about it. I also really enjoyed working with the other math teachers. It was nice to get to know some people who share my passion for math. Hopefully we can start building a community and share ideas with each other.

Far East Math
First day of Far East Math ...
- Amazing "real" mathematician was our keynote. I love listening to math- I know, I know...
- Listened to some really smart students talk about math and its connection to different disciplines.
- Watched a sea cucumber take a wiz on a student.

2.5 = 5.5???
Today I have arrived at Far East Math! Students from all around Japan, Guam, and Korea have come together to participate in math activities. Sounds like fun right?!?! Well it does to ME. We left base at 6am (meaning I was up before 5am). Our flight took off on schedule at 9am, we were supposed to land at 1130 (2.5hrs) but due to bad weather we ended up landing at 2:30 (5.5hrs). We got to our resort just in time for dinner at 6pm. Luckily my students are great and basically napped the time away. But that meant when we arrived they were wide awake and definitely not happy about their 9:30 curfew. I know I am exhausted and ready for sleep. But this resort rocks! I can't believe we are staying here.

Happy Pi Day Eve!
‘Twas the Night Before Pi Day
Written by Jenny & Amanda
‘Twas the night before pi day
And all through the house
Not a creature was stirring
The pies were all out
Topped with cherries,
Blueberries and peach
In hopes of pleasing
Our favorite math teach
I was lulled to sleep
By the scent of the cream
Vision of math men
Danced in my dream
When out on the lawn
There arose such a plop
I dashed outside
To see 3 pi men plop
The moon glowing brightly
The stars would reveal
3.14, were my eyes forsaking me?
Were they actually real?
3 was the leader
And 1 stood behind
Followed by four
This all boggled my mind
But that was not all
There appeared to be more
One, five, and nine
Were behind the door
Two, six, and 5
Were behind the tree
What do I do?
The pi men have surrounded me!
Intimidated by the numbers
They all formed to one
A strange looking symbol
This did not look fun!
The symbol approached me
Then muttered strange words
About solving equations
It all sounded absurd
“Pi r squared, solve for the circle”
I started to run
I did not wish to solve,
My brain hurt a ton
Its squiggly legs
Came bouncing behind,
Chanting along
“The answer you must find”
Hiding proved
To be in vein
He always found me
He even knew my name
I finally gave in
To his evil grasp
I solve the equation
As he had asked
Pleased by my actions
He gathered all of the numbers behind
They started to leave
It unclogged my mind
And before they’d depart
It had one last thing to say
“Happy Pi celebration to all
And to all a great day!”

Stats
Today was great! We spent the first hour of class talking about statistics. Finally something I am knowledgeable about. I was so excited I was actually able to contribute the conversation, not that there was really much of a discussion but I was happy anyway.
I was even able to complete my work for today in a relatively timely manner. I figured out and used voicethread for the first time. You can see it if you want to here but it is all about functions, more for my TPACK project. But I am proud of learning this new tool.
